Avalon Clementine was born from dragon blood, but as a girl, the highest she can hope to achieve is Crafter Level, trained to be an Air User, but stuck in her human form. It’s the destiny of all dragon-blooded females, forever locked from their other self by a curse laid on their blood line a thousand years ago.

But Avalon isn’t worried about not being able to shift into another form. She’s worried about making it into Spearwood Academy, the only school anyone of the dragon blood wants to attend.

Her father, however, has different plans. He wants to keep her far away from the school that destroyed his family.

At Spearwood Academy, before students can learn to shift into their dragon form, they have to prove they can survive the cut.

After Jericho revealed Avalon’s status as an Outcast, everyone has turned against Avalon, even people she didn’t know. Sure, Enid and Jackie still talk to her, but they share a dorm, and they’re never home. Left abandoned, Avalon’s hurt turns to anger at those who abandoned her just because of her family’s standing. Is status truly all that matters to the dragon blood?

But where there’s dark, there’s light, and Avalon finds a new friend in an unlikely place. Lusk has stepped into the gap left by Maverick’s and Bullock’s abandonment, proving that not everyone hates Outcasts, especially not this hot-tempered Fire user.

Dragon-blooded Avalon returns home for the summer, but nothing is the same. Tensions run high with Jericho, and she discovers not everything at the orchard is as she left it. Master Hendricks has increased his visits, putting the workers under strain and her dad under scrutiny.

During her belated birthday celebration, new revelations from her dad open more questions that could put her in a dangerous position when she returns to Spearwood.

Avalon's return to Spearwood was supposed to reunite her with her friends and with Lusk, but after overhearing his plans to force students into failing, she finds herself crushed and in doubt of who she can trust.

On top of that, Avalon's air classes are failing to get off the ground...literally.

She finds herself locked out of the Air building, along with the rest of the Apprentices, and time is ticking down for her to discover a way inside. If she can't report to her classes before the Winter Solstice, she'll be thrown into a trial that could cut her time at Spearwood short, if she survives.

Things are tense at Spearwood Academy, but not that Avalon has made it into the Air building, she has a lot to catch up on. Whispers of students running off go through the school, but that's normal when students at the bottom are afraid of being stripped of their powers and cast out. Avalon is determined not to become on of the ones who disappears.

That doesn't mean she doesn't have time for fun and games, though. The school has opened the hidden village for a Halloween event, and Avalon puts her heartbreak aside to go have fun with her friends. The night ends in terror, though, when the unthinkable happens. Not every student who vanished ran away. It seems that someone besides the school is picking off students, and the culprit may be someone Avalon knows.

Students are dying, and this time, it's not Spearwood's fault.

Someone is picking off those close to Avalon, and she fears she may know who it is. But can she accuse the boy she once gave her heart to? With the school on lockdown, moving around becomes even more difficult, limiting where students can be. Avalon feels isolated and cut off from everyone she could turn to.

When the final trial for the year arrives, she finds herself paired with an unlikely team, but they may be exactly who Avalon needs in order to survive her second year at Spearwood.

New year, new problems for Avalon’s return to Spearwood. How will she transition into her new status as a Crafter?

Avalon returns to Spearwood as a pod leader for new Air users just arriving to Spearwood Academy. As a third year, she's made plenty of her own mistakes, her biggest being when she doubted Lusk, the one person who never once doubted her.

Amidst terrible dreams of being attacked, Avalon questions if she's the right person to be molding young minds. But a new year is made for new changes, and she's determined to put her best foot forward. If only the mistakes she made in her previous two years didn't keep coming back to bite her.
